Cowichan Sweaters… How Could I Forget?
I was watching Canadian Pickers on Saturday and finally got a good look at the sweater the one dude is always wearing. Actually, he’s always wearing that sweater and a knit scarf that looks super duper warm all the time. I managed to take a pic of my TV so I could keep it as a reference :) And yes… I love watching all these antique type shows! lol
I posted that pic to twitter and Chris aka Vtknitboy on twitter reminded me that what he’s wearing is a Cowichan Sweater. I immediately was transported back to my youth and remembered my dad coming home with a bag of sweaters for the family that looked EXACTLY like these Cowichan sweaters. We all had matching snowflake ones. How cheesy huh? Wish we took a pic! As I was streaming through google pics… I decided that I was going to make myself one. I need a good fall jacket and I love how warm and cozy these look. I’m not sure if I will stick to the traditional eagles/snowflakes/animals theme… but I will figure it out :)
Heatherly aka Heatherlybadov on twitter mentioned that she had a similar sweater that was her grandfathers that her great grandmother had made, except it had a golfer on it and it said FORE! Now… I KNOW I have this vintage pattern somewhere. I’ve seen it… I’ve held it. I remember joking around telling my husband I was going to make him one! Unfortunately, I’ve starting packing all my knitting mags including all my vintage ones for the move. Today however, I was determined to see if I could quickly open some boxes to see if I could find it.
I haven’t found it yet… BUT I did find some other patterns that are it’s ‘friends’ ;) I have a bunch of these Mary Maxim patterns. I love them soooo much. I’m thinking now that I can just use one of these as the blueprint for my Cowichan sweater :)
How beyond awesome are those??? I love how the patterns are just graphs… no written patterns!!!
And if you want raglan sleeves… just fold down the flap and ta da!
It even comes with a ruler for checking your gauge :)
I love looking through all these old patterns. While I was packing I realized that I have a TON of vintage baby and kids patterns. Can’t wait to bust some of those out for Madison :) I’ll be sure to post some pics of them once I unpack them again.

Ha! That bowling pattern is hilarious!! I still can’t believe that you have the golfer pattern, what are the odds?!
I LOVE that horse sweater pattern! Hmm maybe I DO want to learn intarsia…
These sweater patterns are so rad! Love the raglan / inset sleeve option. So ingenious. I hope you knit them all. :)
Hello.
The sweater in the photo may indeed be a Cowichan sweater, but is more likely to be a Buffalo wool sweater or a 4-ply sweater such as from the Mary Maxim patterns you have shown. The name “Cowichan” can only be applied to sweaters made by the Cowichan/ Coast Salish knitters of the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. This website tells a little about genuine Cowichan sweaters.

I have been knitting with Buffalo wool for many years and am always on teh lookout for Buffalo wool patterns to use with my dwindling stash of wool.
